Doge's Palace

  Historical

The Palazzo Ducale, better known as the Doge’s Palace, was the official residence of the Doge of Venice, the seat of government and court. Originally built as a ducal palace in the 9th century, it was modified in the 14th - 15th century into its current Venetian-Gothic style with an imposing façade of white Istrian stone and pink Verona marble. The courtyard is closed off by the erstwhile Doge’s Chapel which is now the San Marco Basilica. Explore the palace to see the Museo dell’Opera which showcases the medieval architectural sculptures and reliefs of the building, the government chambers, Doge’s private apartments, old prison, and the Bridge of Sighs which leads to the new prison.
