Founded by Yūyo Shōsō in the 14th century, the Zōjō-ji is the headquarters of the Chinzei branch of Jōdo-shū Buddhism. The 2-storey Sangedatsumon (Main Gate) is painted red, and has images of Shakyamuni Buddha, Samantabhadra, Manjusri bodhisattvas, and the 16 arhat disciples of the Buddha. The Hondo or Main Hall enshrines the Amida Buddha. The complex has a 17th century Daibonsho (Big Bell), Kyozo which contains sutras (sacred texts), Koshoden (lecture hall), and Ankokuden which houses a black image of the Amida Buddha. The complex also has a mausoleum that houses the graves of 6 of the 15 Tokugawa shoguns. It lies off the beaten track and is rarely visited by tourists, though it is particularly beautiful around cherry blossom time.
