Ueno Zoo 3.4 rating

  Children Friendly

The Ueno Zoo, a part of Ueno Park, is Japan’s oldest zoo and home to over 460 species. A great place for kids, it has animals from all over the world including zebras, macaques, penguins, llamas, ostriches, white-tailed eagles, lemurs, rhinos, tigers, and of course, the world-famous adorable Giant pandas from China – Ri Ri and Shin Shin. Some animals are housed in cramped enclosures, but the zoo overall is good for an outing. There is a petting zoo where kids can feed friendly goats. Also in the complex is a 5-storey pagoda which was part of the Kanei-ji Temple.

On weekdays, zoo guides lead a 45 minute tour of the grounds through the highlights.
