Mt Fuji, Tokyo

Mount Fuji, about 100 kilometres to the southwest of Tokyo, is an active volcano and the highest mountain in Japan with a height of 3776 metres.

Mount Fuji, about 100 kilometres to the southwest of Tokyo, is an active volcano and the highest mountain in Japan with a height of 3776 metres. One of the most popular tourist sites in Asia, it is a sacred Shinto site and one of Japan’s 'Three Holy Mountains'. Book a day tour to this iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, and explore the area for great views of the pristine Japanese countryside. Relax at the Yamanakako village at the foot of the mountain, and wallow in the warm waters of the onsen (hot spring). Go up to the 5th Station if you are not interested in climbing till the summit. The Fuji Visitor Center has a museum and exhibits on the geophysical and cultural history of Mt Fuji. Return to Tokyo in the evening on a Shinkansen or bullet train.

You can choose to combine your trip with other attractions in the area. Cruise on the scenic Lake Ashi or Hakone Lake, and explore the surrounding Hakone National Park area. Take the Mt Komagatake Ropeway, and ride the tram to the peak for gorgeous views of the Owakudani volcanic valley. You could take a guided tour of the Kawaguchi Sengen Shrine and Lake Kawaguchi as well as Hahanoshirataki Falls. At the northwest base of Mt Fuji is the tranquil Aokigahara forest where you can explore the rocky, icy caverns, and understand why it is known as the ‘suicide forest’.
