The Botanic Gardens in Belfast have been open to public since 1895, offering 28 acres of landscaped greenery. Just inside the Stranmillis Road entrance near the Ulster Museum is Lord Kelvin's statue, honoring the scientist who who propounded the temperature scale starting at absolute zero. The park is home to the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine. The Palm House, designed by Charles Lanyon and completed in 1840, is one of the earliest examples of a glasshouse made from curved iron and glass. It houses a range of exotic tropical plants in the tropical wing, and several flowering plants in the cool wing. The Tropical Ravine, completed in 1889, houses some of the oldest seed plants around today, as well as cinnamon and orchid plants.
