The Tiananmen Square is a large and historic public square in Beijing where Chairman Mao, the father of communism in China, declared the foundation of the People’s Republic on 1st October 1949. One of the largest city squares in the world, it has the Tiananmen Gate (from which it gets its name), Monument to People’s Heroes, Great Hall of the People – meeting place of National People’s Congress, Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, and the National Museum of China, which traces the history of China from the Yuanmou Man of the Middle Pleistocene era to the end of the Qing Dynasty in the 20th century.

Guards in green-uniforms with red badges patrol the area to this day, as a throwback to the old iron-curtain communist regime. Today, the Square is widely associated with the suppression of the pro-democracy protests in 1989.
