Situated at the confluence of the Taiwan Strait and the Tamsui River, the Tamsui District offers spectacular sunset views of the waterfront at dusk. The heart of Taipei's commercial district in the 19th century, the area still retains several historical attractions such as Fort Anthonio (Hongmao Castle) that was built by the Dutch in the 17th century, Fuyou Temple, Red Castle, and Longshan Temple of Manka which was built by 18th century settlers from Fujian. Other landmarks in the area include Itteki Memorial House, Little White House, Danshui Church, Mackay Exhibition Hall, Oxford College, and Hobe Fort.
Take a Shun Feng ferry from the Tamsui Ferry Pier at the north end of the waterfront area across the river to Bali Township or Guandu Pier. You can also go further north to the Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf which has seafood restaurants and coffee shops along the boardwalk, as well as the Lovers' Bridge. You can also take a boat-ride to Taiwan's scenic northeast coast from here.
The busy Tamsui Old Street is lined with shops, restaurants, arcades, and handicraft stalls. You can sample local delicacies such as A-gei (fried tofu stuffed with cellophane noodles, served in chili sauce) at Wenhua, Original or Three Sisters, fish ball soup at Ke Kou, fish crisps, sour plum juice, and iron eggs (boiled eggs braised in a mix of herbs and then dried).
