Taipei 101, Taipei

Soaring to a height of 509.2 metres, the Taipei-101 was the world's tallest building from its completion in 2004 to 2010 when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai overtook it.

Soaring to a height of 509.2 metres, the Taipei-101 was the world's tallest building from its completion in 2004 to 2010 when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai overtook it. The post-modernist building is an engineering marvel built to withstand the most devastating natural calamities prevalent in the area, including earthquake tremors and typhoon gales of upto 134 mph (216 kmph). Its elevators, once the fastest in the world, can zoom up at 60 kmph.

The building has a mall from the basement to the 5th floor, above which are the office levels. There is an Indoor Observation deck on the 88th - 89th floor at a height of 383.4 metres, and an Outdoor Observation deck on the 91st floor at a height of 392 metres, which is the highest of its kind in Taiwan. The panoramic views from here are awe-inspiring. The 101st floor has the Summit 101, a private VIP club.

The building also presents a radiant sight during New Year's Eve when it is illuminated with fireworks.
