Bare Island is an islet within Botany Bay in south-eastern Sydney connected by a footbridge to the suburb of La Perouse. First spotted by Captain Cook and noted as 'a small bare island', it became the site of a fort in the 1880s for its strategic location. The fort remained in operation until 1908, after which time it became Australia's first war veterans' home for personnel engaged in Crimea, Sudan, and China. Today, the waters around the islet are a popular snorkeling and diving spot, home to sea horses, sea dragons, and various colorful fish of the Kamay Botany Bay National Park. It was also the filming location for some of the most intense scenes in Mission Impossible 2 in which Tom Cruise climbed up the cliff and rode a motorcycle through fire, with the fortress being used as Ambrose's bunker.
