The General Post Office in Martin Place is a historical building that served as the headquarters of Australia Post till 1996 when it was privatized and refurbished. The original building was constructed in 1866-'74 on the site of an earlier postal building to designs by James Barnet. The landmark clock tower was demolished in 1942 to blend in the building with the surroundings so that it could not be targeted by air attacks. It was rebuilt in 1964. Made from local Sydney sandstone, the 114 metre long northern façade on Martin Place is the finest example of the Victorian Italian Renaissance Style in NSW. The façade on George Street is noted for its marble sculptural ensemble of Queen Victoria flanked by allegorical figures. The Pitt Street façade was controversial at the time of inauguration for its realistic portraits which deviated from the artistic standards of the era.
