Sydney Observatory, Sydney

Towering over the city from atop Observatory Hill, Sydney Observatory not only offers great views of the Sydney Harbour and city but also of stars, nebulae, and planets that are light years away.

Towering over the city from atop Observatory Hill, Sydney Observatory not only offers great views of the Sydney Harbour and city but also of stars, nebulae, and planets that are light years away. Built in 1858 on a site that previously had various structures such as a windmill, then Fort Philip, and a signal station, the Italianate sandstone buildings feature distinctive copper telescope domes. The Observatory houses the oldest working telescope in Australia, a 29 cm refractor from 1874. It also has the7.25-inch Merz refracting telescope from 1861, a 42cm computer-controlled telescope, 40 cm Schmidt-Cassegrain mirror telescope, and a hydrogen-alpha solar telescope. There is a 3-D Space Theatre where you can explore the universe. The digital planetarium has shows about astronomy which delve into Aboriginal astronomy, as well as the history of space flight.
