The Government House adjacent to Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens is the vice-regal residence of the Governor of New South Wales. The epitome of Gothic Revival architecture in Sydney, the castellated house with its 5 hectares of landscaped gardens was built in the 1840s to designs by colonial architect Mortimer Lewis. Guided tours of the Government House are conducted on most Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Visitors can explore the restored interiors which feature hand-painted stencil ceilings, and see the rooms that were once the quarters of the Governor, Queen Elizabeth, members of royalty, and other visiting heads of state. Admire the elegant furnishing which includes a significant collection of portraits, period furniture, decorative arts, and gubernatorial memorabilia. Located behind the Sydney Opera House, it offers unique views of the landmark building.
