Fort Denison, Sydney

Situated on the island formerly known as Pinchgut in the Sydney Harbour, Fort Denison is the only Martello Tower built in Australia by the British Empire.

Situated on the island formerly known as Pinchgut in the Sydney Harbour, Fort Denison is the only Martello Tower built in Australia by the British Empire. Originally called the Mat-te-wan-ye by the Eora, the island has been a fishing spot, penal facility, sandstone quarry, defence structure, navigational guide, tide gauge station, weather station, time marker, and now an event space and historic museum.

To reach Fort Denison, take a ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 6. Ferries depart every 45 minutes between 10.20 AM and 4 PM, seven days a week. Explore the island on your own or book a guided tour that takes visitors around the Fort and present an overview of its various functions. The museum has an exhibition of the island's history from Aboriginal times. Discover the fully operational tide gauge room where Sydney's tidal benchmark is recorded. A cannon is fired at 1 PM daily to mark the time.
