Elizabeth Farm, Sydney

Built in 1793 as the family home of wool pioneer John Macarthur and his wife Elizabeth, Elizabeth Farm is considered to be Australia's oldest extant colonial building.

Built in 1793 as the family home of wool pioneer John Macarthur and his wife Elizabeth, Elizabeth Farm is considered to be Australia's oldest extant colonial building. The original 3 room Georgian brick cottage was transformed in the 1820s into a country house set amidst 400 hectares of gardens and orchards. The house comprises 2 parts – the 15 room family living quarters, and the servants quarters of 8 rooms. The Australian Colonial homestead has been preserved with all its period furniture and family letters and newspapers that shed light on the history of that era. Visitors can wander freely throughout the house which has no barriers. The recreated 1830s garden has Tea Rooms where visitors can enjoy Devonshire teas and lunch. The garden also has trees from the first years of settlement, including Australia's oldest European olive tree.
