Customs House Sydney, Sydney

The historic Customs House was built in 1844-'45 to control maritime trade and the influx of people into Sydney.

The historic Customs House was built in 1844-'45 to control maritime trade and the influx of people into Sydney. The Customs Service, which was based here till 1990, was responsible for all imports and exports, excise on locally manufactured goods, immigration control, and control of narcotics and banned substances. Built on the land of the Eora people, it is the site of the First Fleet landing in 1788 when 11 ships from England arrived to found the penal colony that became the first European settlement in Australia. The original 2-storey Georgian structure designed by Mortimer Lewis was replaced in 1885-'87 by the 3-storey structure on a U-shaped plan by James Barnet. Two additional floors and a wing were added by W Vernon in 1896-1903, and further modifications by George Oakeshott in 1915-'17 involved a full framed structure and addition of a 6thstorey.

Explore the oldest surviving building of its type in Australia, and see the 4.2 metres x 9.5 metres scale model of Sydney's city centre on the ground floor. Today, it houses the collection of over 400,000 items of the Library of the City of Sydney. The paving in the Customs Square in front of the building depicts the original tidal zone as it was at the time of the First Fleet landing.
