Beng Mealea, which literally translates to 'lotus pond', is a jungle temple built circa the 12th century which lies off the beaten tourist path for its remote location. Located 40 kilometres to the east of the main temple complex at Angkor, it draws comparisons to the Angkor Wat. Surrounded by a 45 metre wide moat, the east oriented complex has a central sanctuary crowned by a single tower. Around it are 3 concentric galleries connected by cross-shaped gopurams, of which the outermost gallery measures 181 metres by 152 metres. Built as a Hindu temple, the sandstone structure has extensive sculptures depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, as well as some carvings depicting Buddhist motifs.
