Angkor Wat 5.0 rating

Angkor Wat, the 'capital temple' is the largest religious monument in the world, and part of the Angkor Archaeological Park that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This 12th century temple was founded as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu the Preserver, but transformed into a Buddhist temple, with elements of both harmoniously coming together in this archetype of Khmer architecture. The staggering scale of the sprawling temple mountain is awe inspiring and a testament to the architectural esthetic of the Khmers.

The Angkor Wat complex was designed as a miniature replica of the universe. The temple-mountain represents the mythical Mount Meru at the center of the universe, with the five towers corresponding to its peaks, and rectangular walls and moats representing mountain chains and the cosmic ocean. Every detail of this sandstone marvel has been designed meticulously and smoothly polished. More than 3000 sculptures of ethereal apsaras or celestial nymphs adorn the friezes of the temple. Enter through the Preah Peanor Gallery of Thousand Buddhas to reach the Gallery of Bas-Reliefs on the first level, which is covered with fine works depicting scenes from mythology and history. Highlights of the gallery at Angkor Wat include ●Battle of Kurukshetra and Battle of Lanka in the west gallery, ●Army of King Suryavarman II and Heavens and Hells in the south gallery, ●the legendary 'Churning of the Milky Oceans' in the east gallery, and ●Victory of Krishna and Garuda over Bana the demon in the north gallery.

Guided tours of Angkor Wat give you a great understanding of the Khmer culture and the underlying symbolism behind the sculptures. To avoid crowds and get gorgeous views of the Angkor Wat bathed in golden light, join a sunrise or sunset tour. You can combine your visit to Angkor Wat with a tour of other attractions in the Archeological Park and neighboring areas for a complete experience of Cambodian culture.
