Angkor Wat, the 'capital temple' is the largest religious monument in the world, and part of the Angkor Archaeological Park that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This 12^th century temple was founded as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu the Preserver, but transformed into a Buddhist temple, with elements of both harmoniously coming together in this archetype of Khmer architecture. The staggering scale of the sprawling temple mountain is awe inspiring and a testament to the architectural esthetic of the Khmers.

The Angkor Wat complex was designed as a miniature replica of the universe. The temple-mountain represents the mythical Mount Meru at the center of the universe, with the five towers corresponding to its peaks, and rectangular walls and moats representing mountain chains and the cosmic ocean. Every detail of this sandstone marvel has been designed meticulously and smoothly polished. More than 3000 sculptures of ethereal apsaras or celestial nymphs adorn the friezes of the temple.
