One of the oldest temples at Angkor, Pre Rup was built in the 10th century as the state temple of Khmer king Rajendravarman.

One of the oldest temples at Angkor, Pre Rup was built in the 10th century as the state temple of Khmer king Rajendravarman. It is dedicated to Hindu deity Shiva. Laid out on a square plan with 2 layers of laterite walls enclosing the complex, its eastern part has 4 cross-shaped external gopuras and a central brick section representing Mount Meru that is flanked by 2 sandstone vestibules. The inner enclosure has a 3-tiered pyramid which rises to a height of 35 metres. At the center of each face is a stairway leading to top, guarded on both sides by lion statues. The lowest tier is symmetrically surrounded by 12 small shrines that used to feature lingas. At the top, 5 towers are arranged in a quincunx.
