The three 9th century temples of Bakong, Lolei and Preah Ko to the east of the Great Lake are some of the earliest permanent structures built by Khmer kings, and mark the beginning of classical period of Khmer civilization which set the . The complexes feature concentric layers of enclosure walls with Gopurams (pavilions) at entrances in the cardinal directions. They feature central brick towers and libraries, the exact purpose of which is still not pinned down. Bakong and Lolei also have associated Theravada Buddhist monasteries.
