Aspendos is an ancient Greco-Roman city near Antalya, that is known for the well preserved ruins of its amphitheater from the 2nd century AD. Located at the foot of an ancient acropolis, the amphitheater is adjacent to the ruins of a basilica, agora(assembly), nymphaeum, aqueduct, and a bouleuterion (council).

Explore the Aspendos amphitheatre and step back 2000 years in time imagining the performances of yore. The cavea or open semi-circular seating area is divided into two tiers, encircled by a wide covered gallery with 59 arches. There are post holes for planting awning poles when required. The 2-storey stage building with 5 doors opening out to the audience is topped with an ornamental wooden roof. Next to the stage is a small museum displaying masks and clay tickets from the ancient times.

The excellent acoustics of the complex are worth experiencing. The Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival organized by Turkish State Opera and Ballet shows an annual season of productions in the amphitheater in spring and summer. Productions range from concerts by the State Orchestra to international operas and ballets.
