As its name implies, Pioneer Square is the heart of Seattle and the place where the city's founders settled in 1852, after the settlement at Alki Point on the far side of Elliott Bay. While the original wooden structures were ravaged by the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, some of the Richardsonian Romanesque style brick and stone buildings from the late 19th century have survived to this day. The square also features turn-of-the-century street lamps, and a Tlingit totem pole alongside a drinking fountain with a bust of Chief Seattle.

The Underground Tour covers the area around Pioneer Square, and visits sites both above and below ground. After the fire of 1889, engineers rebuilt the city several feet above the high tide line to prevent flooding, giving rise to a complex underground tunnel system around the old downtown. Tours are insightful and humorous. The 'Underworld Tour' in the evenings for adults only includes a drink and explores the opium-filled red light district that once occupied the 'underworld.'

Around the square are the Milepost 31, Klondike Gold Rush - Seattle Unit, and UPS Waterfall Garden Park, with a 22 foot waterfall that marks the birthplace of the UPS.

The Art Walk around Pioneer Square takes place on the first Thursday of every month.
