Alcatraz, San Francisco

Alcatraz Island is known for its infamous federal penitentiary, nicknamed 'The Rock', on the treacherous bay.

Alcatraz Island is known for its infamous federal penitentiary, nicknamed 'The Rock', on the treacherous bay. It started out as the first lighthouse on the West Coast, then became a military outpost, and finally a federal prison till it was decommissioned in 1963. Take a sightseeing tour of Alcatraz to learn about its turbulent history, and hear recorded interviews of former prisoners and correctional officers who had spent time on the inescapable island. Its former incarcerated occupants include Prohibition-era gangster Al Capone, Depression-era gangster Alvin 'Creepy' Karpis, 'The Birdman of Alcatraz' Robert Stroud, and bootlegger George 'Machine Gun' Kelly, among other convicts. Peek into the Cell Blocks, see the profuse flora and fauna on the island, and follow the Agave Trail to the Cell House from where you get incredible views of the bay, the Golden Gate bridge and San Francisco.

Tours of Alcatraz sell out early, so make sure to book your tickets well in advance.
