Coit Tower, San Francisco

Visible from all parts of San Francisco and the Bay Area, the Coit Tower stands atop Telegraph Hill in Pioneer Park and offers an excellent view of the surroundings. The tower was built by the Federal Works Projects Administration in 1933 with money bequeathed by eccentric San Franciscan and wealthy socialite Lillie Coit.

The 210 feet tall Art Deco tower was designed by architects Arthur Brown, Jr. and Henry Howard, and is built of unpainted reinforced concrete. Although local legend has it that the fluted cylindrical building was designed to evoke the end of a fire-hose as Coit was recognized as an honorary firefighter, it has been confirmed to be a coincidence. The building has an observation deck at the top below an arcade which offers incredible views of the city and bay. The first and second floors house beautiful examples of New Deal-era idealist murals by 26 artists, and the top floor has featured paintings or other art. Artists put in their own signatures and messages in the murals, which interpretive plaques point out.
