Stretching from Plaça Catalunya to Carrer Gran de Gràcia in the heart of Eixample, Passeig de Gràcia is an arterial road in Barcelona lined with architectural masterpieces. Lined with important commercial areas and shopping destinations, it is one of the most expensive streets in Spain. Laid out in 1827 as a 42 metre wide avenue for aristocrats to display their luxurious horse-drawn carriages, it was further developed as a posh destination with the construction of Modernista/ Art Nouveau buildings in the early 20th century. Buildings of note include –

  • The Illa de la Discòrdia group of strikingly different and disharmonious buildings at #35-43 that reflect the individualistic creativity of their architects - Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí, Casa Lleó Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, and Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier.
  • Casa Pons i Pascual by Enric Sagnier at #2.
  • Fundació Antoni Tàpies in the Montaner i Simon publishing house by Lluís Domènech i Montaner at #47.
  • Hotel Majestic at #68 has hosted Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Ernest Hemingway.
  • Casa Milà or La Pedrera by Antoni Gaudí at #92.
  • Casa Ramon Casas by Antoni Rovira i Rabassa at #96, the residence of Catalan painter Ramón Casas which is noted for its carved stone façade.
  • Palau Robert by Henry Grandpierre and Joan Martorell i Montells at #107, a late Neoclassical building that was the former private residence of aristocrat Robert Robert i Surís.
  • Casa Bonaventura Ferrer or El Palauet by Pere Falqués i Urpí at #113.
  • Casa Fuster by Josep Puig i Cadafalch at #132.
High-end international brands from Prada and Louis Vuitton to Valentino and Jimmy Choo all have outlets. The route is lined with ornate benches and street-lights from 1906 designed by Pere Falqués i Urpí.
