The Santa Maria in Cosmedin is an 8th century minor basilica that is known for being the home of La Bocca della Verità or Mouth of Truth. The marble Bocca della Verità functioned as a mythical lie-detector, supposedly biting off the hand of anyone who told a lie while his hand was in the bocca. The other highlight of the church is the supposed skull of St Valentine with a floral crown which has been preserved and kept on display in a side altar. The Romanesque church is also worth visiting for its well-preserved early medieval choir enclosure as well as Cosmatesque pavement.
