Spanish Steps, Rome

Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) is a monumental Baroque stairway of 135 steps, built with French funds between 1721-1725 in the heart of Rome.

Spanish Steps (Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti) is a monumental Baroque stairway of 135 steps, built with French funds between 1721-1725 in the heart of Rome. It was constructed to link the the Holy See in Palazzo Monaldeschi at Piazza di Spagna below, with the Trinità dei Monti Church and Bourbon Spanish embassy in the Piazza Trinità dei Monti above.

At the lower end of the stairs is the early baroque fresh-water fountain Fontana della Barcaccia or Fountain of the Ugly Boat, in the shape of a sinking ship with water overflowing its bows. It represents a fishing boat that was carried all the way to this exact spot during a massive flood of the Tiber River in the 16th century. At the corner to the south of the stairs is the house where celebrated English poet John Keats lived and died. Today it is a museum honoring him.
