Altare della Patria, Rome

The Altare della Patria or Altar of the Father honors Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy and Father of the Fatherland.

The Altare della Patria or Altar of the Father honors Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy and Father of the Fatherland. It is also known as Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II) or Il Vittoriano, and has various nicknames ranging from "wedding cake" to "typewriter" owing to its architecture. The neo-classical white Brescian marble structure with Corinthian columns and fountains also has the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame, and a Shrine of the Flags where flags of disbanded units of the Italian Armed Forces are preserved. The tiered pavilion is centered around a gilt-bronze equestrian statue of Victor Emanuele II, and there are statues of Goddess Victoria riding a quadriga on top of each propylaea or entrance porch on either side of the building. At the base is the Museo Centrale del Risorgimento, a museum on the unification of Italy. You can take the elevator to the roof for panoramic views over Rome.
