Cristo Redentor, Rio de Janeiro

The towering statue of Christ the Redeemer standing with outstretched arms atop Corcovado overlooking the city is an iconic symbol of Rio de Janeiro.

The towering statue of Christ the Redeemer standing with outstretched arms atop Corcovado overlooking the city is an iconic symbol of Rio de Janeiro. The 30 metre tall Art Deco statue in soapstone and concrete was designed by Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by Paul Landowski.

The Corcovado Rack Railway operates 3 electric trains which take visitors from Cosme Velho up the 3.8 km long track to the statue in approximately 20 minutes. Trains depart every 20 minutes, and run from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. You can get great views of the Tijuca flora along the way. Alternately, there is a narrow road that leads to the top, with buses plying the route. From the terminus, the observation deck at the foot of the statue is accessible by 223 steps, or by elevators and escalators.
