Copacabana is the most famous beach in Rio de Janeiro, stretching for 4 kms on the Atlantic coast from Princesa Isabel Avenue to Posto Seis. The crescent-shaped white sandy beach offers gorgeous views all around, from the Sugarloaf and Fort Duque de Caxias in the north to the Copacabana Fort in the south. Hit the beach for a spot in the sun or join in a game of beach volleyball or soccer. It is a place for people-watching, crowded with good-looking people with chiseled physiques. The iconic promenade at the edge of the sand along Avenida Atlantica is noted for its black and white Portuguese pavement with the mosaics forming serpentine geometric wave patterns. Lined with numerous cafes, bars, restaurants, hotels and night-clubs, it has a very vibrant nightlife all year round, culminating in a spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks display.
