The Amphitheatre of Pompeii is the oldest known surviving Roman amphitheatre built of stone, dating back to 80 BC. It lay buried under volcanic debris for centuries till overlying material was cleared in 1823. This historical amphitheatre is believed to have been the original model for subsequent such constructions, as no similar structures have been found pre-dating it. Elliptical in shape, it was capable of holding upto almost 20,000 spectators, who were divided into 3 areas depending on their social class.
