Housed in a historic Victorian building on North Terrace, the Art Gallery of South Australia has over 38000 works from around the world, with a focus on Australian art from 1800 to the present day, including Aboriginal art. The 19th century colonial art collection showcases the high quality of South Australian art since the early days of European settlers from the 1830s. The collection shows the evolution of art styles through the Australian Impressionism era to Modern and contemporary works. Australian drawings, prints, photographs and decorative arts add to the variety of the collection.
The European collection has works from the 15th century to the present day, including some great Old Master works. The Asian collections has an eclectic mix of art from several countries including China, India, Iran, Japan, and southeast Asia, across a range of media such as stone, wood and bronze sculpture, ceramics, textiles, painting, and lacquer ware. There is a contemporary North American collection on display as well.Sun
