Louvre Museum, Paris

Housing one of the world's great museums since 1793, the Louvre Palace offers some dazzling architecture, wide public spaces and the glass pyramid of I M Pei.

Housing one of the world's great museums since 1793, the Louvre Palace offers some dazzling architecture, wide public spaces and the glass pyramid of I M Pei. Of course, there's also quite a bit to see inside the building. Its exhibits come from such diverse origins as ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, medieval Europe and Napoleonic France. Its most famous exhibit is Leonardo da Vinci's painting of the Mona Lisa (French: La Joconde, Italian: La Gioconda), generally to be found surrounded by hordes of camera-flashing tourists. If you want to see everything in the Louvre, plan at least 2 full days. However, it is better to pick and choose, as the collection comprises over 1 million items of which 35,000 are on display at a time.

The Louvre Museum has 3 wings - Sully Wing to the east, Richelieu Wing to the north and the Denon Wing which borders the Seine to the south.

  • The ground floor is dedicated to antiquities. The Denon and Sully wings display Greek (6500 – 30 BC) and Roman (100 BC – 500 AD) artifacts, the highlight of which are the 'Venus de Milo' and 'Winged Victory of Samothrace', the epitome of late Hellenistic art. The Sully wing also displays Egyptian Antiquities (4000 – 30 BC), and part of the Near Eastern Antiquities collection (7500 BC – 500AD) along with the Richelieu wing. You can see the Colossal statue of Ramesses II, Stele of the Vultures from the ancient Sumerian city of Girsu, Code of Hammurabi displaying Babylonian Laws, Persian Archers of Darius I, mural of the Investiture of Zimrilim, and the Statue of Ebih-Il found in the ancient city-state of Mari. The Denon Wing also displays Italian and Etruscan Antiquities (900 – 200 BC) as well as the collection of Arts of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas (700 BC – 1900 AD).
  • On level 1, the Denon wing has European Sculpture (500 – 1850 AD), Italian, Spanish, British and American paintings from the late Middle Ages till 1850. Apart from the Mona Lisa, check out ✓Da Vinci's 'Virgin and Child with St. Anne', 'St. John the Baptist', and 'Madonna of the Rocks', ✓Rembrandt's 'The Supper at Emmaus', 'Bathsheba at Her Bath', and 'The Slaughtered Ox', ✓Jacques-Louis David's 'The Coronation of Napoleon', ✓Eugène Delacroix's 'Liberty Leading the People', ✓Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini's versions of 'Calvary', ✓Caravaggio's 'The Fortune Teller' and 'Death of the Virgin', ✓Titian's 'Le Concert Champetre', 'The Entombment', and 'The Crowning with Thorns'.

The Sully wing has Drawings, Prints and Engravings (1350 – 1850) and part of the Egyptian Antiquities collection which includes 'Seated Scribe', Statue of Amenemhetankh, Gebel el-Arak Knife, and 'Head of a sphinx of King Djedefre'. The Richlieu wing showcases French Sculpture (500 – 1850 AD). The Decorative Arts collection (500 – 1850 AD) is spread over all 3 wings.

  • On level 2, the Denon wing has Islamic Art (700 – 1800 AD) and Near Eastern & Egyptian Art (30 BC – 1800 AD). The Richelieu and Sully wings have French and Northern European paintings (1350 – 1850), including ✓Enguerrand Quarton's 'Avignon Pietà', ✓Hyacinthe Rigaud's Portrait of Louis XIV, ✓Johannes Vermeer's 'The Lacemaker' and 'The Astronomer', and ✓Caspar David Friedrich's 'The Tree of Crows'.
