Musee de l'Armee, Paris

The Musee de l'Armee or Army Museum presents the history of the French Army, from the 13th through 20th century.

The Musee de l'Armee or Army Museum presents the history of the French Army, from the 13th through 20th century. Housed in the Hôtel national des Invalides, it is co-located with Dôme des Invalides, the Dome Church which holds Napoleon Bonaparte's tomb. The collection of old armour and weapons covers the time from feudal army to royal army and its progression till Louis XIII, displaying a good set of medieval swords. The Arsenal Gallery display recreates the layout of former arsenals putting together 2500 pieces. There is also a collection of rifles and paraphernalia related to leisurely pursuits such as hunting and jousting. The Modern department showcases historical military artifacts from the 17th to 19th century, through pieces of the French Revolution, Bourbon Restoration, 100 Day War and Franco-Prussian War. There is a small contemporary collection of artifacts from the World Wars, and Cold War era. A highlight is the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, which displays painstakingly accurate models of French fortresses which were created for military use.
