Le Marais, Paris

Le Marais, also called as 'Old Paris', was once the aristocratic district of Paris as the favorite residential neighborhood of French nobility.

Le Marais, also called as 'Old Paris', was once the aristocratic district of Paris as the favorite residential neighborhood of French nobility. It was established on the marshland ('marais') on the Right Bank of the Seine in the 12th century by the Order of the Temple, and flourished till the French Revolution, after which it fell into disuse. It still retains several elegant old mansions from the 17th century, many of which are of historic and architectural importance.

The heart of the district is the Place des Vosges, earlier known as Place Royale, surrounded by facades that were all built to the same design of red brick with strips of stone quoins, over a base of vaulted arcades on square pillars. Notable residents include Victor Hugo and Cardinal Richelieu. Today, the buildings house various art galleries. At #14 is the Synagogue Charles Liché in the Hotel de Ribault, though the Rue des Rosiers across the square has been the historical home of the city's Jewish community (Pletzl). Le Marais also has the Mémorial de la Shoah which serves as a Holocaust Museum, and the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme near Jardin Anne-Frank.

Le Marais has several notable museums, including the Carnavalet Museum, Picasso Museum, Musée Cognacq-Jay, and Musée des Arts et Métiers. Along the western edge on Rue du Renard stands Centre Georges Pimpidou with the Musée National d'Art Moderne, the largest modern art museum in Europe.

Explore the area to see the magnificent hôtel particulier, or private mansions - Hôtel de Sully – a Louis XIII mansion that houses the Centre des monuments nationaux, Hôtel d'Angoulême Lamoignon which is now the Bibliothèque Historique de la Ville de Paris, Hôtel d'Aumont, Hôtel de Beauvais, and Hôtel de Sens.

The northwest part of the district is home to a Chinese community originally from Wenzhou. Le Marais is also the LGBT hub of Paris, with hip bars and pulsating nightclubs that throw the liveliest parties in town.
