Agios Neophytos Monastery, Paphos

Founded by Saint Neophytos in the 12th century, the Agios Neophytos Monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Founded by Saint Neophytos in the 12th century, the Agios Neophytos Monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Engleistra where Neophytos lived in seclusion was originally a natural cave on the hill, where Theodoros Apsevdis later painted the fine Byzantine frescoes for which the monastery is known. His rock-table and the stone platform on which he slept are still preserved in his cell, along with his tomb which is believed to have magical powers. The main church also has excellent Byzantine icons.
