The first of its kind erected in 1919 at the end of World War I, the Victory Arch on Burgundy Street pays tribute to the fallen residents of the 9th Ward. The carved stone arch, inspired by Roman triumphal arches, has an entablature inscribed with 'Erected AD 1919 By The People Of This The Ninth Ward In Honor Of Its Citizens Who Were Enlisted In Combative Service And In Memory Of Those Who Made The Supreme Sacrifice For The Triumph Of Right Over Might In The Great World War'. The bronze plaques on the abutments have bronze plaques with the names of those who died in the Great War.
