Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans

Lake Pontchartrain is a wide and shallow brackish estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico via the Rigolets Strait.

Lake Pontchartrain is a wide and shallow brackish estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico via the Rigolets Strait. Measuring 40 miles in length from east to west and 25 miles from north to south, it is the second largest inland saltwater lake in the United States. The 24-mile long causeway that spans the lake from Mandeville in the north to Metairie in the south is the longest bridge over water in the world. Along the shore are a series of parks collectively known as Lakeshore Park.

The Fontainebleau State Park on the north shore of the lake was once the site of a sugar cane plantation and is now a green area with marshlands, camping grounds, and fishing waters. It is also home to a variety of birds.

The adjacent Big Branch Marsh National Wildlife Refuge has 15,000 acres of pine flatwoods, oak rides and coastal marsh which are home to a wide variety of wildlife. The St. Tammany Wildlife Refuge forms its northern part.

The Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge on the east shore is the largest urban wildlife refuge in the United States, sprawling over 23,000 acres of marshland, bottomland hardwood forests, lagoons, chenieres, and natural bayous.

Running along the south shore is the scenic Lakeshore Drive, with the Old Spanish Fort, New Canal Lighthouse, Pontchartrain Beach, and West End Park on it. The Lakeview neighborhood lies further inland, and is noted for its excellent eateries.

To the west of the estuary are the Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area and Manchac Wildlife Management Area.
