Jackson Square, New Orleans

Named in honor of Battle of New Orleans commander and 7th US President Andrew Jackson, the Jackson Square on the Mississippi River bank is the heart of the city's French Quarter.

Named in honor of Battle of New Orleans commander and 7th US President Andrew Jackson, the Jackson Square on the Mississippi River bank is the heart of the city's French Quarter. Formerly known as the Place d'Armes, the square is a National Historical Landmark for its pivotal role in history. The historic square is a bustling plaza with live music, street artists, and tarot readers. It is bordered by Chartres Street, St Peter Street, Decatur Street, and St Ann Street. At the center is a bronze equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson sculpted by Clark Mills on a massive granite block. It was the first statue to feature a rearing horse, and depicts Jackson on the morning of 8-January 1815, reviewing his troops before the battle and returning his troops' salute by lifting his plumed hat. The base is inscribed with Jackson's paraphrased words, "The Union must and shall be preserved".

To the northwest of the square lies the majestic Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis from 1718, the oldest continuously operating Catholic church in the US. The Spanish Colonial minor basilica is flanked by 2 buildings of the Louisiana State Museum – the Presbytere which was once the seat of the Louisiana Supreme Court, and the Cabildo, the seat of the Spanish colonial government and the site where France gave New Orleans to the US with a flag-raising ceremony on the Jackson Square. To the north-east stands the 1850 House, an antebellum townhouse furnished in period style. Along the south-east of the square is the Washington Artillery Park and Moonwalk, a beautiful promenade along the Mississippi River. The other sides of the square are occupied by the red-brick 4‑storey Pontalba Buildings, lined with shops and restaurants. Also on the square is the Jax Brewery.
