Housed in a renovated 16th century building that was used as cavalry barracks, the Naples National Archaeological Museum houses a large collection of Greco-Roman artifacts from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. The museum has three main sections -

  • The Farnese collection of Pope Paul III, comprising finds from Rome and surroundings including the Farnese Marbles, the Farnese Cup - a 2nd century BC Ptolemaic bowl made of sardonyx agate, the Farnese Bull sculptural ensemble carved in a single marble slab, Venus Callipyge, other sculptures from the Baths of Caracalla, statue of Apollo, Farnese Atlante , and gems. The Emperors Gallery displays a collection of portraits and busts of Roman emperors and Greek philosophers.
  • Pompeian collection of finds from the Vesuvian area, such as mosaics from the Casa del Fauno (La battaglia di Alessandro contro Dario - The Battle of Alexander against Darius), Secret Cabinet of erotic artifacts, finds from the Temple of Isis, Doriforo, Aphrodite Sosandra from Baia, Venus of Capua, glazed ceramics, pottery, silverware, ivory, bronzes, glass, marble busts, frescoes, Cumana vases, plastic model of Pompeii, and the Herculaneum papyri from the Villa dei Papiri that were carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
  • Egyptian collection of antiquities comprising mummies, sarcophagi epigraphs, funerary stelae, and the Picchianti collection which was gathered by Venetian traveler Giuseppe Picchianti during a 6 year long trip of the Nile Valley and Nubian desert.

Also of note is the Salone della Meridiana which has a great working sundial and remarkable ceiling frescoes.
