Naples Cathedral, Naples

The Naples Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of San Gennaro, is the seat of the Naples Archdiocese and the main church in the city.

The Naples Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of San Gennaro, is the seat of the Naples Archdiocese and the main church in the city. Built by the Angevins in the 13th century on the site of a 6th century church, the French Gothic cathedral is dedicated to San Gennaro (Saint Januarius), the city's patron saint whose blood is contained in a vial here in the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro. The blood is brought out biannually on the first Saturday in May and 19 September, when it miraculously liquefies. The Baroque Royal Chapel is also noted for its magnificent frescoes by Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco, high altar by Francesco Solimena, and other artworks.

The 4th century Basilica Santa Restituta dates back to the original church on the site and is the oldest chapel in Naples, with fragments of 27 columns from the Temple of Apollo. Other highlights include the paleo-Christian baptistery in the Chapel of San Giovanni in Fonte, 4th century Greco-Roman mosaics, the Minutolo Chapel's frescoes, Byzantine-style mosaic of the Virgin Enthroned by Lello da Roma, and canvasses by Luca Giordano.
