Fort Takapuna, built between 1886 and 1889 at the head of the Rangitoto Channel in the Hauraki Gulf, offers a glimpse of New Zealand's 19th - 20th century military history. It was the last of its kind in the country to house twin 6 inch disappearing guns in underground pits that controlled access to the Rangitoto Channel.
