Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum exhibits archaeological findings from the Acropolis of Athens. Built over an archaeological site, the museum has glass floors that allow you to see the excavation work happening underneath. A guided tour of the museum is a great way to understand the great ancient Greek culture at its peak.

The Gallery of the Slopes of the Acropolis displays finds from the sanctuaries and settlements on the slopes of the Acropolis, the transition zone between the city on the plains and the elevated 'Sacred Rock'. The Archaic Gallery displays larger-than-life Parian marble sculptures of the pediment from the Old Temple of Goddess Athena, depicting the Gigantomachy battle between Gods and Giants. You can also see the remains of Hekatompedon - the earliest building on the Acropolis, and votive offerings by ancient Greeks to Athena. The Parthenon Gallery holds a significant collection of Pentelic marbles from the Parthenon in a replica of the original arrangement - the frieze depicts the quadrennial Great Panathenaia festival in honor of Athena, metopes depict subjects from victorious battles against the Persians, and pediments illustrate stories from Attic mythology. The chronologically arranged collection ends with the later buildings of that era - the sculptures of the Caryatides of the Erectheion, the Ionic order Temple of Athena Nike, the Propylaia which was the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, and statues from the 5th century BC. to the 5th century A.D as the Greek Polis began declining due to the Peloponnesian war.
