Altes Rathaus, Munich

The Altes Rathaus on Marienplatz was built in 1470-'80 on the site of the first Munich town hall, and served as the seat of the municipality till 1874. Today it houses the Spielzeugmuseum or Toy Museum. Designed by Jörg von Halsbach in Late Gothic style, it features an elegant façade surmounted by a tall stepped gable roof, topped by turrets in the centre and corners. The west façade has the statue of Ludwig the Bavarian, while the east façade has Henry the Lion.

The 55 metre tall spire was formerly the Talburg Gate (Talburgtor), which predates the rest of the structure. You can climb to the top for great views over Munich.
