Marienplatz, Munich

The Marienplatz is the central square of Munich, named after the Mariensaule - the Marian Column topped with the golden statue of Virgin Mary.

The Marienplatz is the central square of Munich, named after the Mariensaule - the Marian Column topped with the golden statue of Virgin Mary. Located in the heart of the Old Town, it has been Munich's main square since the founding of the city in 1158 by Heinrich den Löwen. Appropriately located at the intersection of the 2 main axes - the east-west axis between Isartor and Karlstor, and the south-north axis between Sendlinger Gate and Schwabing Gate, the square was home to medieval markets, celebrations, and tournaments. The square has continued to be the hub of social and political life of citizens, and is a popular meeting point for locals and tourists.

It is surrounded by the Neues Rathaus (New City Hall) with its Glockenspiel to the north, Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall) to the east, Thomass-Eck and Marienplatz 2 to the west, and several cafes and showrooms to the south and west. Apart from the Mariensaule, it has the Fischbrunnen or Fish Fountain, Kräutlmarktbrunnen, and Bezaubernde Julia (Charming Julia) sculptures. The Christkindlmarkt or Christmas Market is set up here in winter.
