The English Garden is a vast urban park sprawling over 900 acres on the west bank of the Isar river, from central Munich to the northeast edge of the city. Laid out in 1789 by Carl Theodor, Munich's green lung is over twice the size of New York's Central Park and the main recreational area for residents. The park is divided into 2 sections by the Mittlerer Ring –

  • The southern section extends over 320 acres from the Haus der Kunst on Prinzregentenstraße along the students' quarter of Schwabing, and is part of the protected landscape of Isarauen. It is densely populated with people jogging, cycling, walking, horse-riding, sunbathing and skating. It has the Japanese Teahouse, Monopteros, Kleinhesseloher Lake, Natur- und Kulturtreff Rumfordschlössl, and the Chinese Tower with Munich's second largest beer garden next to it. The southern half is connected to the northern section by a pedestrian bridge near the Seehaus beer garden.
  • The northern section, also known as Hirschau, has sparsely populated fields with taller grass and colorful wildflowers in summer. It has the Amphitheatre where the Münchner Sommertheater (Munich Summer Theatre) performs free classic comedies in the summer, and the Aumeister beer garden.
