The Church of St John the Evangelist is an Anglican Church built by British colonialists to commemorate the casualties of the First Afghan War which lasted from 1839 to 1842 and witnessed the death of 4500 British and Indian soldiers.

The Church of St John the Evangelist is an Anglican Church built by British colonialists to commemorate the casualties of the First Afghan War which lasted from 1839 to 1842 and witnessed the death of 4500 British and Indian soldiers. Below William Wailes' stained glass window in the nave are memorials and regimental colors of martyrs from the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-'80) which British India won. It has come to be known as the Afghan Church.
