The 7th century Monastery of St Simeon on the west bank of the Nile is a Coptic monastery that was first dedicated to the 4th century local saint Anba Hedra and later to St Simeon. It was partially destroyed in 1173 by Ayyubid Sultan Saladin as it had become a refuge for proselytizing Christians. The basilica still has traces of Byzantine frescoes.
