The Last Supper 4.5 rating

  Landmarks

Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper (Il Cenacolo) is housed in the refectory of the Dominican convent of the Santa Maria delle Grazie, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The expansive 8.8 m x 4.6 m painting depicts the biblical Last Supper of Jesus with the 12 Apostles, capturing the moment after Jesus revealed that he would be betrayed, as told in the Gospel of John. All of them are seated to one side of a long table, centered around Jesus, with facial expressions and gestures conveying different emotions, from James’ astonishment to Peter’s anger and John’s sadness. Originally created with tempera on stone as an experimental technique by da Vinci in 1495, the painting flaked over time and was restored over 21 years starting in 1978.

Only a small group of 20 – 30 people are allowed to view the painting for 15 minutes at a time, and advance reservation is mandatory. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, again with reservation. Book your tickets today to ensure you get to admire one of the most studied and appreciated paintings in the world.
