Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie or Saint Mary of the Graces is best known for housing Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper in its Dominican convent.

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie or Saint Mary of the Graces is best known for housing Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece The Last Supper in its Dominican convent. The complex commissioned by the Duke of Milan Fracesco I Sforza is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a highlight of any trip to Milan.

Built to designs by Guiniforte Solari starting in 1463, and later modified by Donato Bramante, the red and cream terracotta brick structure stands as a good example of Renaissance and Gothic architecture in Milan. The unique tiburio (dome) has a 16-sided polygonal base with 32 arched bays, tapering towards a crowning lantern, and stands out distinctly higher than the façade of the apse. The Gothic interiors have frescoes by Gaudenzio Ferrari, Bernardo Zenale, and Bramantino.

Heavily bombarded during World War II by the Allies, much of the refectory was destroyed, but The Last Supper survived due to sand-bagging. The original cloisters were also completely destroyed.

The tranquil Chiostro delle rane (cloister of the frogs) leads to the Bramante Sacristy which displays extracts from the Codex Atlanticus, the comprehensive 12-volume set of original sketches, drawings and writings by Leonardo da Vinci which offer a peek into the mind of the genius. The other half of the collection is on display at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana. Also of note is the blue painted sky in the vault of the Sacristy, studded with golden stars.
