The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is the largest cathedral in the Americas, built from 1573 to 1813 combining 3 different colonial architectural styles - Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-classical. The gigantic cathedral has 4 elaborate façades with portals flanked by columns and statues, while the interiors have 16 chapels with ornate churrigueresque altars. It is home to several remarkable works of art. The 2 bell towers by José Damian Ortiz de Castro house a total of 25 bells.
